Kursi Merak (Peacock Chair) design for the playground turning into kid favourite slides.
At the heart of PIK 2’s Indonesia Design District, this playground reimagines Indonesian heritage through play. Sculptural forms inspired by traditional furniture and games invite climbing, gathering, and exploration. Designed for comfort, safety, and visibility, it creates a vibrant cultural landmark where families connect and children discover local identity.
Playground site located within the vibrant commercial spine of Indonesia Design District, PIK 2. Part of the Indonesia Design District, the 714 m² playground reinterprets Indonesian furniture and traditional games into sculptural forms. More than just a play space, it becomes a cultural landmark within a modern lifestyle hub.

Without trees or natural shade, the space faced constant sun exposure and minimal slope for drainage. The challenge was to make the playground both visually engaging and physically comfortable, ensuring safe play while maintaining an open, inviting atmosphere in a hard urban environment by introducing shade, texture, and form that transform a flat plane into a lively, layered playscape. Each element balances play value, cultural expression, and microclimatic care, showing how thoughtful design can turn simplicity into strength.

Drawing from familiar Indonesian objects, like papan congklak, kursi merak, and meja Betawi, the playground invites users to interact with cultural forms in new, playful ways. These elements are reinterpreted as climbable structures, social seats, and sensory surfaces. A vivid red pathway links the zones, referencing the national flag while guiding exploration. Together, they form a cohesive environment that is both nostalgic and fresh.

hade sails extend comfort and activity hours, while soft edges and railings frame safe exploration for families. These updates ensured the space remains both functional and engaging for everyday use. The result is a play environment that remains faithful to its story yet responsive to its site, a vibrant, safe, and made to last.

Its central position within IDD offers visibility and ease for parents to linger around, while the playful reinterpretation of heritage objects sparks curiosity in children. The result is a space that fosters bonding, discovery, and casual interaction in an otherwise commercial setting.
