A New Heart for Jakarta: Tebet Eco Park Awarded President’s Design Award

July 13, 2023

This recognition is a testament to the power of ecological design to heal urban spaces and reconnect communities with nature. More than just an award for a project, this is a celebration of a shared belief: that a park can be a city’s living, breathing heart.

From Neglected Space to Ecological Asset

For decades, the park in Tebet was a fractured landscape—an ageing public facility divided by a busy road, burdened by a polluted, concrete-lined waterway. It was a space people moved around, not towards. Our challenge was to look beyond a aesthetic upgrade and ask a deeper question: How can a park become an act of regeneration for both nature and people?

Our design answered by transforming the park’s greatest liability into its greatest asset. The 714-meter concrete canal was demolished and re-naturalized into a meandering river with functioning wetlands. This nature-based solution now actively manages stormwater, mitigates flooding, and cleans the river, attracting fish, birds, and other wildlife back to the city.

Connecting People, Connecting Nature

Our vision was to create a journey of growing together. To physically and symbolically stitch the divided park, we designed the Infinity Link Bridge. This iconic structure rises gently through the existing tree canopy, connecting the two halves of the park while offering visitors an immersive experience of walking amongst the trees.

The revitalized park is now a multi-layered ecosystem of experiences. A community lawn serves as a green stage for gatherings, thematic gardens showcase local biodiversity, and a playground inspired by swamp habitats invites joyful discovery. From a forgotten space, Tebet Eco Park has been reborn as an ecological and social asset for Jakarta — a place where thousands of people connect with nature, and each other, every day.

As one of the first major landscape projects in Jakarta to champion an ecological design approach, Tebet Eco Park has planted a seed of possibility. It stands as a testament to our purpose: to design beyond beauty, creating impactful landscapes that benefit the land, the community, and the environment. We are immensely grateful to our client and collaborators who shared in this vision.
